IIEES in collaboration with national institutions and RCECWA have organized the 25th National Earthquake and Safety Drill in all schools in Iran. The pilot school for this year was Narjes Secondary School, located in district 6 of Tehran. In this exercise, all students practiced self-protection, evacuation as well as self-rescue measures.
This is worth mentioning that IIEES initiated its nationwide school earthquake drill program in 1996. In 2015, this program was expanded to the neighborhood levels to promote resilience and taking appropriate activities for earthquake risk reduction and capacity building, called as “Safe Schools – Resilient Communities” program. The program involves safe public schools to offer hazard risk education and preparedness tools to community members, connecting student’s knowledge to their parents and other residents in the community. Safe schools are perfect nodes for raising awareness and implementing community based activities in earthquake risk reduction and management, since they are education hubs in each community involving parents, children, teachers and local residents alike in different temporal and spatial scales. The interaction between local residents and school teams help improving social capital, community involvement, civic awareness and social cohesion.
This program is being conducted nationally yet with international involvement. This was also approved as a flagship program in DRR 2025 plan of ECO Member States. This year, RCECWA in Collaboration with IIEES has developed a program to have joint activities in this regards with the neighboring countries. We hope that next year we can organize simultaneous drills with some of the countries located in the West and Central Asia.
