The 26th Nationwide “Earthquake and Safety” drill was simultaneously conducted in all schools across Iran. Based on the recommendation of the UNESCO Regional Education and Research Center on Earthquake Risk Management and Resilience for West and Central Asia (RCECWA), in this drill, special attention has been paid to improving the preparedness and safety of children with disabilities in facing earthquake hazards. To this end, educational guidelines for these students were prepared by RCECWA and distributed to all schools, including exceptional schools, for use in the drill.
The main aim of the drill is to increase students’ awareness about earthquakes, improve their preparedness for proper and rapid reactions, and empower them to face emergency situations following earthquakes. Furthermore, to emphasize the importance of safety and preparedness for students with disabilities, the national drill was held in one of the exceptional schools (Soroush School) located in Tehran.
It is worth mentioning that this year’s nationwide drill was organized by the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES), in cooperation with relevant institutions, and with the participation of RCECWA, UNICEF, and UNESCO.
