Academic and Professional Activities
The “Regional Education and Research Center on Earthquake Risk Management and Resilience for West and Central Asia (RCECWA)”, as the Category 2 Center under the auspices of UNESCO is in close collaboration with the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) to conduct research and education activities. Up to now, many projects carried out at RCECWA, some of which in collaboration with IIEES. The existing capacities of RCECWA and IIEES covers different areas in seismology, earthquake engineering and disaster risk and resilience management. More than 40 faculty members as well and around 80 associate research are now working with RCECWA on the followings topics:
- Conducting multidisciplinary and multi-hazards risk assessment;
- Organizing research and education programs on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM);
- Developing regional and urban planning guidelines on risk mitigation, preparedness, emergency response and recovery management (based on cultural and socio-economic conditions);
- Modeling dynamic behaviors of all types of structures as well as providing the best, simple, applicable and socially compatible solutions for increasing structural safety;
- Preparing seismic micro-zonation maps and geo-hazard risk assessment;
- Mapping the main active faults, and development of earthquakes catalogs.
The existing capacities of IIEES (including advanced earthquake engineering laboratory, broadband seismic network, etc.) are incorporated to conduct the above mentioned activities.
